Confidential cruise newbuild programme · recent newbuild programme
Njords Ark helped a confidential cruise client transform a high-end reference concept into marine-suitable, customized outdoor balcony furniture for a major newbuild programme. The final package included more than 3,000 stackable balcony chairs and more than 1,500 matching side tables, delivered on time and with no claims received.

Project Snapshot
- Timing: Recent newbuild programme
- Scope: 3,000+ balcony chairs and 1,500+ side tables
- Use: Outdoor cruise ship balconies
- Materials: Aluminum frames, Serge Ferrari IMO mesh, and Aluwood side table tops
- Result: Approved prototypes, on-time delivery, and no claims received
The Challenge
The original design direction was based on a high-end land-based furniture concept. While visually strong, the reference product was not designed for marine use, large-scale cruise delivery, or project-specific customization.
The client needed a solution that preserved the intended design language while meeting the practical demands of cruise ship operation: outdoor exposure, stackability, controlled weight, replaceable parts, repeatable production, and reliable delivery timing.
Njords Ark Solution
Njords Ark used the reference design as a canvas and developed a custom marine-ready version. The chair was engineered with a lightweight aluminum frame, IMO-rated mesh, stackable construction, and replaceable seat and back components so the frame can remain in service longer.
The development process included prototype production, client comments, a revised prototype, final improvements, and final approval before full production.

Production Proof
The project moved from approved prototype to repeatable production across thousands of pieces. The side tables and chair frames were produced as a coordinated outdoor balcony furniture package for a multi-vessel newbuild programme.

Operational Value
The finished chair was not only customized visually, but also built around the needs of long-term cruise operation. Seat and back components can be replaced separately, extending the usable life of the frame and reducing the need to replace the entire chair when wear appears in high-contact areas.

Outcome
The full balcony furniture package was delivered on time and close to factory-level pricing. The furniture met the client’s visual expectations while improving suitability for marine use, maintenance, storage, and long-term operation.
No claims were received after delivery.
